School Closing and Delay Information
In case of emergencies that make it unsafe for the Environmental Charter School to open, information regarding school operations is announced publicly as soon as possible on area radio and television stations. In the event of inclement weather or public safety emergencies, our school will close when Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) has done so and this will be announced on KDKA, WTAE, WPXI, and FOX. If schools are closed or delayed, the announcement will be made by 6:00 a.m. If schools are closing early and children will be sent home, the announcement is made by 11:00 a.m.
In the event of a two-hour delay, students will be picked up at their bus stops 2 hours after their normal time. School will begin at 10:30 a.m. Parents can begin dropping students off at 10:00 a.m. if they are car riders. If a district other than PPS calls for a delay and PPS has not come to that decision, your children will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will not be marked tardy. If students ride buses, they will come by bus 2 hours after the usual time. If you can transport them sooner, we will certainly welcome them when they come! Students will not be marked tardy in these situations. If your home district calls off, and PPS does not, it is your decision to bring your child to school, always keeping safety in mind! When a 2 hour delay is in effect, breakfast will be served until 10:30 on those mornings.
In the event of an early closing, it is essential that students and teachers know where the children are to go and how they are to get home. The school should have a copy of any special instructions on file. In the event that we must close school early due to inclement weather, we will notify parents immediately of the change. Buses will be dispatched immediately, extended day will be canceled and we will work to get all of the children home safely. Parents will be given the option of coming to pick up their children. We are in the process of creating class phone lists to help this process move along efficiently.
In the rare event that a bus has delivered students to school on a day that it is closed, arrangements will be made with the bus company to return the children home. Parents will be contacted before the students are sent home to make sure that the children are returning to a caregiver. For all students transported by car, we ask parents to make sure that a staff member is in the building before leaving.
