Second Grade News

Important Information:

  • Check your child’s student planner and homework folder each night for homework.  Please initial your child’s planner in the yellow box each evening.
  • Please send in a written note if there is a change in transportation.
  • If you haven’t already, please send in a spare change of clothes for your child to store in his/her locker.
  • Please see Second Grade Homework handout (attached) for homework information.

Hike Chaperones Needed

The second grade classes will be hiking to Frick Environmental Center on Thursday, June 7th at the following times:

 

  • Ms. Karichko’s Class 12:15 – 2:45
  • Mrs. Lassiter’s Class 9:15 – 11:45
  • Mrs. Shupak’s Class 10:15 – 12:45

 

Please contact your child’s teacher if you are available to chaperone on this hike.  Hike chaperones must have all clearances on file in the office!

 

Curriculum Corner

 

Spelling and Phonics:

  • Spelling Pattern: ink/ank
  • Students will reinforce concepts through activities such as word building and studying the word pattern. 
  • See homework attachment for the list of spelling words and assignments.

 

Reading Skills:

  • Focus Skill: Comprehension
  • Students will utilize good reading strategies to comprehend a variety of texts.

 

 

Vocabulary Instruction:

  • Students will learn and explore vocabulary.
  • Vocabulary will be reinforced through vocabulary games.

Writing:

  • Focus Skill:  Writing Perseverance
  • Students will use focus to write about a topic.

Mathematics:

  • Students will use arrays to multiply.
  • Students will use a multiplication table to find a product.

Inquiry Block:

  • Students will identify different steps in the process of a product.

Students will sequence product process from start to finish (farm to table).

 

 

Spelling Homework

See attached spelling pattern word study list.

 

Spelling Homework Assignment 1:  Due Tuesday

Use the attached word sort paper.  Write the word sort pattern at the top of each column.  Write each spelling word in the column where it belongs.

Spelling Homework Assignment 2:  Due Thursday

Please choose an activity to turn in Thursday.  Please complete the assignment in pencil on a lined piece of paper.

  • Write your words in ABC order.
  • Write your words two times each.
  • Create a short story using as many spelling words as you can.
  • Highlight Spelling: Write your spelling words.  Highlight the spelling pattern in each word.  Use a different color for each pattern.
  • Word Hunt: search for words in a book or magazine that follows this week’s spelling patterns.  Write down at least 10 words.
  • Type your spelling words on the computer. Choose a font and a color.  If you would like to save paper, ask your family to help you e-mail your homework assignment to your teacher!

 

 

 

Vocabulary Homework (bonus challenge option):

Choose ONE vocabulary assignment to complete.  If you choose to complete this assignment, it will be due on Thursday, May 31st and will be worth 5 bonus bucks.

  • Create a picture dictionary with all 8 words.
  • Write each vocabulary word in a sentence.
  • Create a PowerPoint slideshow using at least 5 words.  Ask your family to help you e-mail the slideshow to your teacher.
